The decision was made one day after Trump chastised Merz for implying that Iranian negotiators had "humiliated" the United States.
As of December of last year, the United States maintained a substantial military presence in Germany, with over 36,000 active duty soldiers stationed at various locations throughout the nation.
The German Press Agency in Berlin was informed by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius that "the presence of American soldiers in Europe, and particularly in Germany, is in our interest and in the interest of the US".
He also made it apparent that the choice was not unexpected.
He stated that it "was inevitable" that the US would remove its soldiers from both Germany and Europe.
Trump said Merz was "doing a terrible job" and had "problems of all kinds" in social media remarks on Thursday, including issues with energy and immigration. Additionally, Trump has proposed removing US forces from Spain and Italy.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had issued the directive regarding US troops in Germany.
