Due to differences over the US-led campaign in Iran, US President Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw some US soldiers from Germany, escalating the conflict between the two countries.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday night, "The United States is evaluating and analyzing the probable decrease of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time."
Berlin and Washington have been at odds on how the United States is handling the battle with Iran. This week, Trump became enraged with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over remarks he made on Monday, claiming that Iran was "humiliating" the United States and criticizing the administration for lacking a workable plan to settle the conflict.
According to data issued in December 2025 by the US Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), there are 36,436 active-duty US military troops stationed permanently in Germany. This figure is significantly greater than in other European nations. In 2020, during his first term as president and while Angela Merkel was the German chancellor, Trump had already threatened to cut back on the amount of troops in the nation.
