US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will travel to Pakistan today to take part in direct peace negotiations with Iran, the White House announced on Friday.
Although Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is in Islamabad to discuss regional peace, Tasnim, an Iranian semi-official news agency, and Nournews Agency, an organization connected to Iran's Supreme National Security Council, both stated that he would not speak with US officials.
This lack of clarity regarding the precise state of the negotiations is nothing new, and it does not necessarily mean that communication between the two parties will not occur in some capacity.
Conflicting reports also surfaced in late March over whether the US and Iran were in negotiations to put an end to the crisis.
At the time, US President Donald Trump claimed that Washington and Iran had "constructive negotiations," despite Tehran's denial of such discussions. On the same day, an Iranian source acknowledged that Washington and Tehran had engaged in "outreach," telling CNN that Iran was open to considering "acceptable" suggestions.
Later, in early April, the US and Iran had high-stakes negotiations in Pakistan that concluded without a deal.
Despite what it described as "reports by some Pakistani sources or Western media about hosting the next round of Islamabad talks," Iranian state media stated a few days later that there were no intentions to have another round of negotiations.
