Maduro arrives in U.S. after military operation in Venezuela, Trump administration officials weighs in on next steps

What you should know about the American military assault on Venezuela

Hours after a dramatic U.S. military operation in Caracas resulted in their imprisonment, former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse arrived in New York on Saturday. Maduro disputes the federal charges against them, which include narcotics trafficking and collaboration with gangs classified as terrorist groups. They are being jailed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. 

A representative for the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York has stated that Maduro and his spouse will appear in federal court on Monday at noon. 

During a news conference, President Trump declared that the United States will "rule" Venezuela for a while in order to "get the oil flowing."

The U.S. will continue to impose a "oil quarantine" as part of a strategy to influence policy, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted on Sunday that the US does not intend to directly administer Venezuela.  

The mission to apprehend Maduro was executed by the U.S. Army's Delta Force, an elite special operations team, officials informed CBS News.

The operation came after months of U.S. military buildup in the area, including the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and several other warships in the Caribbean, as well as a string of fatal attacks on over thirty vessels that the government claims were transporting drugs.
